Should I get a Scottish Terrier?

Before even starting to answer this question it is most important that you consider the implications of having a dog at all. Some of the key points to think about are:

  • Do you have the time to commit to a dog, it will need walking, grooming, feeding, training and playtimes.

  • Can you afford to keep a dog, costs include food, vets fees, pet insurance,  and accessories such as food bowls, collar and lead.

  • Does everyone in the family want a dog and are they willing to participate in looking after it not just during the cute puppy stages but as the dog grows up (Average life span of a Scottie is 12-15 years.)

Once you have answered yes to these questions you are ready to consider what breed you would like.  It is worth researching a number of different breeds very carefully to find the right pet for you and your family.  Pedigree dogs can be very expensive and can cost anything between £200 and £1000 dependant on breeding.  It is also worth considering a crossbreed many hundreds are in desperate need of a good home and make equally good pet dogs.  They usually cost a relatively small amount for the initial purchase, (it is worth remembering that you would still have the costs of keeping a dog whatever its breed.)

Scottish Terriers are bold. independent characters, small dogs with big attitudes.  Do not think that because of their size they will be happy being a lap-dog.  Scotties were originally bred to hunt vermin in the Scottish Highlands, they are tenacious, tough, strong and highly intelligent.  Scotties are incredibly loyal to their owner and close family but can appear aloof to those outside their immediate circle.  If they are raised with children and other pets they will get on with them but as with most breeds an older dog may struggle to adapt.  No dog of any breed should be left alone with a small child.

Scottish Terriers will do their best to amuse and entertain you and it can be difficult to discipline them at times, however you must be consistent or training your dog will be practically impossible.
